Leadership & Management Training
![]()
A big difference between leadership and managerial, and one which many managers seem to overlook, is that management almost always involves (at least in theory) a team of people. While it's true that sometimes a company will hire a "leader" who will act as a general manager on the staff, this is rarely the case. Leadership on the other hand is about the management of a group of people in order to lead them towards some goal - often one that is set out in a written strategy (or charter).
The leadership that exists within a group is generally the result of a decision by one or more members of the group to take on more responsibility and more authority than they were assigned in the beginning. Leaders are given responsibilities by their group, because they have a proven record of doing so, but the decision to do so must also be well thought out, so that there are no serious flaws in the strategy itself. Without such decisions, the leaders themselves become unorganized and uncoordinated - leading them to make poor decisions and bad decisions, rather than those made by more "informed" members of the team.
There is an important distinction between leadership (which is actually very different from managerial leadership) and management. Although both involve the management of a particular group of individuals, the terms are different. The way we commonly refer to this is when we talk about organizational leadership. An organizational leader is someone in the organization who is responsible for planning and controlling the various parts of the company; these are usually called the "operating departments." The "managerial" leader, on the other hand, is the one who sets the goals, makes the plans, and supervises the efforts of the others.
If you are going to be a good manager, you're going to need to learn more about leadership, because that is one of the major differences between the two. If you think you're going to do just fine with managerial leadership, you may find that you can take a lot of the things that you are learning in a managerial class and apply them to your role as a manager. That's what makes the difference between effective leadership and effective management.
If you want to be a leader, you should look at any management class that focuses on leadership. The key to this type of class is to make sure that you get a better understanding of how leadership works and how you can learn to apply it to your own business.
Some organizations do have a requirement that the new leaders are part of the business for a certain period of time, either at the start of the job or shortly thereafter. These leaders spend this time in the group as a mentor and a representative of the organization, helping to shape the way that the group will go. This is called in-house training.
Another important thing to realize is that there is no one single definition for leadership. In actual fact, leadership is about many different things - all of which are interrelated. It can be seen in many different ways: as the process by which a group develops a strategy, as the process by which leaders lead their groups towards a common goal, as the process by which the group achieves its goals, as the process by which people trust one another and work together towards achieving the same goals, and so on.
The definition of leadership is often determined by the culture of the organization, and how the leaders within that culture think and act toward the goals of the organization. Leadership, then, is really a matter of style rather than a matter of any one quality - it is about having the ability to use communication to encourage and motivate people into becoming effective in their roles.
